Defending Ipswich Sunday race winner Chaz Mostert (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Falcon FG X) led Tickford Racing’s Friday at Queensland Raceway, posting the third fastest time of the afternoon in second practice at the Ipswich SuperSprint. The Queenslander led the team in both main game practice sessions, while his co-driver, James Moffat, placed 13th in the morning’s additional driver session. Steve Owen paced the team in the additional session, placing fifth in the No. 56 RABBLE.club Ford.

Mark Winterbottom (No. 5 The Bottle-O Ford Falcon FG X) enjoyed a significant turnaround between practice sessions, finishing the afternoon with the fifth quickest lap time after placing 19th in first practice. Richie Stanaway (No. 56 RABBLE.club Ford Falcon FG X) strung together an impressive pair of practice sessions, placing ninth and tenth across the two, building the Kiwi’s confidence heading into his first race round at Ipswich.

Results were not as kind to Cameron Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Falcon FG X), however the 23-year old is confident there is more speed than the time sheets show, and that he is not far from joining his teammates in the top half of the grid.

Tickford Racing returns to the track Saturday at 11:20 a.m. AEST for Practice 3 around the 3.12-kilometre circuit, followed by Race 19 qualifying at 1:25 p.m. At 39 laps, Race 19 will test teams for 120 kilometres, with the race scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.

“We had a really bad car in Practice 1, we struggled quite a bit, but in Practice 2 I think we tidied it up a lot. The P2 tyres that I ran were not giving us a great read, which was frustrating, but then we put the green tyres on at the end and it made a lot more sense. I feel like we’re pretty close. I feel a lot more comfortable than I feel like I have been for a long time. I was pretty disappointed after Practice 1 and pretty pumped and confident after Practice 2, so it’s a good way to finish the day. We’ll go into tomorrow, one more practice session to try and tune it up again, but we finished nice today, which is better than the alternative, so it was a good day.”

“Practice 1 we really struggled. We made a few gains between practices, but I just had a lock up on my green tyre run, and it cost us quite a lot of time. Without that, I think we would have been in the ten pretty comfortably, but in saying that we’re not completely happy with the car. It’s promising, we’ve just got to fix a couple things, and I have to put the lap together. If we do that, I think we’ll be in good shape.”

“I’m ecstatic. To get in the top three, go have a press conference after the session, it shows you’ve had a pretty good day. It’s one of those things you take for granted when things are going well, over the past few years I’ve been up there pretty regularly, so obviously today was a really good day for us. I still think there’s a bit more stuff we need to try and digest with the car tonight, try to make it a little bit quicker. But at the same time there were some things we tried today that went well, too. Overall, I’m pretty ecstatic. It’s good for the team, I just wish I had put my finger out a little bit more to get that last tenth (to P1).”

“It was good to be in the top ten in both sessions, and hopefully we can keep it up for the rest of the weekend. Working with Chaz, I think, is starting to pay dividends. Obviously he had a pretty good day, and I think following his direction has helped us find some pace as well. Hopefully we can stay in the top ten all weekend, but it’s early days, so we’ll see how we go tomorrow. But it’s a much better starting point than we’ve had anywhere else all year, so all good so far.”

“It was a pretty good day on the whole for the team. We got our co-drivers some more laps, which is always helpful, and our cars had some positive pace throughout the day. We feel our cars are going quicker and we’re starting to get some results to back that up, which has the team a bit more upbeat. But obviously Friday doesn’t count for points, so we’ll see how we can improve and try to get further up the order tomorrow.”
