TICKFORD RACING – DARWIN TRIPLE CROWN SATURDAY REPORT
16 June, 2018

With a frustrating Saturday in the books, Tickford Racing will look for redemption on Sunday after Cameron Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Falcon FG X) led the team home in Race 15 from Hidden Valley Raceway in 12th place.

Chaz Mostert (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Falcon FG X) equalled his starting position in the 15th race of 2018 by finishing 17th on the day, while Mark Winterbottom (No. 5 The Bottle-O Ford Falcon FG X) recovered from a Lap 2 spin to finish 20th, while Richie Stanaway (No. 56 RABBLE.club Ford Falcon FG X) battled tyre issues en route to a 23rd place finish to cap a difficult day for the four-car team.

On-track action at the Darwin Triple Crown resumes Sunday with Race 16 qualifying at 9:25 a.m. ACST, followed by the Top Ten Shootout at 10:45 a.m., and Race 16 (70 laps) at 1:30 p.m.

“When you’re in the pack you kind of cop it a bit, and that’s what happened again. I had a good start, I just got driven off the track at Turn 1, which was frustrating. I dropped back a bit, and then caught a few hits in the back later, in the pack it always happens. We’re not quick enough right now, we’re trying to get in the right position so we can go racing, but where we are you’re always going to get knocked around a bit. We’ll see how we go tomorrow.”

“I guess it wasn’t a bad day considering the weekend we’ve had with struggling for pace. I got a good start and that was all okay, then just got absolutely drilled by Golding at Turn 1, it took both Frosty and myself out, I’m not sure what he was thinking. The pace from there was actually pretty good. We went a little bit longer without a stop, and the car looked after its tyres and we came home pretty happy. It’s a bit better, but we’re still chipping away at it.”

“It’s always a tricky day if you don’t quite qualify well. We started 17th, finished 17th, we were just trying to make our car better and better. We had a big swing at the balance of the car in the race, we got some little things wrong, maybe found some gains in some other areas, but it’s just super tough to race here. We finished 17th. Tomorrow’s a new day. We really need to use tomorrow as another test day for us, keep trying to get more data, keep throwing things at it. At least there’s a long path that we can go with this direction instead of actually being stuck at the end of the path like we were on some other weekends, so I’m excited for tomorrow.”

“We just had no pace today. It felt like I was on wet tyres on a dry track. That’s how it felt so it was definitely frustrating. We just had no pace, and I had to drive so slow not to overheat the tyres. I feel like I was driving with my hands tied behind my back, so for me it was a pretty boring race. I made some mistakes while trying to compensate for the tyre temperatures, but if we had the car right I wouldn’t be firing it off trying to make it do things it doesn’t want to do. It’s frustrating, but we’ll make the necessary changes and hopefully be able to do some racing tomorrow.”

Tim Edwards, Team Principal
“It goes to show how important it is to qualify up front in this series. A few tenths of a second is usually a dozen or so places on the grid, and when you end up on the short end of things like we did today, and in a short race like today, there’s not much you can do. And when you’re buried back there it’s easy to get caught up in someone else’s mistake and Cam and Mark copped that today. Obviously we have a fair bit of work to do, that’s already started, and fortunately tomorrow’s a new day, so we’ll hope to have a better go tomorrow.”
