MELBOURNE, Victoria | Tickford Racing has today pulled the covers off the #55 Ford Mustang which will race in the classic 2007 Castrol livery this week at Sandown.
In conjunction with Castrol and V8 Sleuth, the Thomas Randle steered Gen3 Mustang is donned in a livery that was chosen by fans over a knockout vote in September this year.
The voting was held on the V8 Sleuth website, allowing fans to choose from seven retro Castrol race cars including legends like Larry Perkins, Russell Ingall, Greg Murphy and Tony Longhurst.
Originally driven by Steven Richards, the livery boasts a race win at Surfers Paradise and a podium result at Symmons Plains during the 2007 season.
The livery may be most remembered for its efforts in the 2007 Bathurst 1000, where the car was caught out by slippery conditions at The Chase.
Winterbottom went shooting through the sand and gathered the car up before rejoining the race around traffic, although the offroad adventure ultimately took them out of contention with 14 laps to go.
The #55 Mustang will also see the return of iconic long term team sponsor Orrcon Steel Manufacturing on the rear quarter as it lived on the 2007 design.
Boasting a decade long relationship with the organisation, the return of the proud brand to the #55 Mustang puts a wonderful touch to bringing back the classic livery on the modern Supercar.
Supported by other quintessential elements such as the Ford window banner, the Orrcon Steel Manufacturing logo will sit right within the Falcon which was also present on the 2007 design.
This will be the third time that Castrol and Randle partner with Tickford Racing in bringing back a retro livery to Supercars, with the most recent being last year’s Sandown event where the iconic sawtooth design raced by Larry Perkins made its return to the track.
Randle will be looking to bring the livery back to its former glory this weekend as he tackles the Sandown 500 in Melbourne.
He has had previous success at the track with a podium when Sandown featured as an endurance event, partnering with the at the time main game driver Lee Holdsworth in 2019.
The #55 Castrol Mustang will hit the Sandown Raceway for Practice one on Friday at 14:40 AEDT.
#55 Castrol Racing Driver Thomas Randle Said:
It’s tough to say where this one stacks up, but it’s honestly super special. The fact that it was a Tickford FPR livery getting put back on a Tickford car, albeit a Mustang this time, is very exciting.
To be driving a car that was driven by two great guys, Frosty and Richo, is something special. The team have done an amazing job replicating it as best as possible, even with some of the old partners on the car. They’ve come on board and the Falcon is on the side of the car as well, which is pretty special.
Castrol has been with the team for nearly 25 years. It’s an incredible partnership with a lot of brand loyalty and trust. It’s not just about running the livery, it’s celebrating what’s been achieved throughout all those years, and that’s what’s really special.
5 times Bathurst 1000 Champion and 2007 #6 Castrol Edge Falcon driver Steven Richards said:
The 2007 livery was a pretty cool one. Back in the day we had a lot of success through the enduro campaign, and a lot of good fun together.
I think the fans voted for the livery because it was quite unique at the time. It had the Falcon, so maybe there’s a bit of passion from the Ford fans remembering it.
We had a great combined livery with Castrol and Orrcon, and it’s awesome to see that all coming back this weekend. It relates with a lot of people, those moments Frosty and I had and it’s great to see people remember it.
2013 Bathurst 1000 Champion, 2015 Supercars champion and current Tickford Racing Co-Driver Mark Winterbottom said:
This livery was a pretty special one to me so when I saw Castrol had the votes, I jumped on and commented straight away. I picked that car because it does mean a lot.
It was cool to catch up with Richo again and relive those memories. It didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but we had so much fun that weekend, and so many stories, and we went on to create quite a few after that one as well.
I want to see what it looks like on a Mustang, and I want to see Thomas do his work and get it up the front.
It’s really cool to see Castrol doing this, and more sponsors should be doing it. The sport is built on history, and to see these historic cars coming back in some shape or form is great for the sport.
Brand & Product Manager - Castrol ANZ Jan Willink said:
Castrol is proud to have a rich history in Supercars, and there’s no place like Sandown to bring that heritage to life for the fans.
Fans will always be at the heart of motorsport and it’s really important to Castrol that we listen to them. To be able to honour legendary cars and drivers - like Frosty and Richo – at the same time is icing on the cake.
The 07’ BF Falcon Castrol EDGE livery looks simply incredible! Hopefully Castrol Racing fans agree that it does justice to the original in a way that’s rarely seen these day.
National Sales & Marketing Manager, Orrcon Steel Manufacturing Daniel Crompton said:
Orrcon Steel Manufacturing has a proud history with the team, so seeing this livery return brings back a lot of great memories for our people and customers.
Our involvement in motorsport was always about more than having the Orrcon name on the car. It was about bringing people together and building strong relationships. Today, we’re equally proud of what Orrcon Steel
Manufacturing represents: local mills, local expertise and products made here in Australia.
To reconnect with Tickford Racing for this special occasion and see the Orrcon name back on such an iconic livery is something we’re genuinely excited to be part of.
