We were delighted to see blue skies and sunshine as we rolled into the track for day 2 of the Bathurst 1000.
First to rollout from the team was the Dunlop series forRace 1 qualifying. Dalton and Gray set the mark for the field to chase with strong laps early in the short session. Not too far behind, Goodall and Morris were finding the extra speed needed to put together a good lap.
Gray and Dalton were both setting flying laps to end the session which secured them a place within the top 5 shootout. On his final lap within the last 30 seconds, Goodall put what he needed on the timing sheet to squeeze into 5th position.
Nash had a respectable time that was on the fringes of making the top 5 as the chequered flag fell.
RACE 1 QUALIFYING
Car #6 Lochie Dalton: 1st
Car #55 Rylan Gray: 2nd
Car #5 Reuben Goodall: 5th
Car #222 Nash Morris : 8th
As the top 5 shootout commenced, Goodall was first out to set the benchmark time. With the track cooling slowly, he was slightly off his qualifying time but still valuable experience for a gruelling track.
Gray was second last to roll out and he was flying across the top of the mountain, balancing on the edge of what is required in a tough session. When Dalton hit the track, it was all ahead of him as he started his flying lap in chasing down Gray’s time which was provisional pole.
When Dalton crossed the line, he led by 2 tenths to take pole position in the first race of the weekend. A commendable effort by everyone in the team that sees all four cars in the top 10.
Practice 3 was an all-drivers session in which all main drivers started in the cars. Another day of different testing for the team before the afternoons all important qualifying.
Both Randle and Waters set blistering times and for all but the last few minutes of the session, sat as the 2 fastest times on the board.
PRACTICE 3
Car #6 Waters/Winterbottom: 4th
Car #55 Randle/Moffat: 7th
Car #5 Gray/Dalton: 20th
The final practice rolled around just after midday, to more blue skies and the sun shining. It gave both main and co-drivers the opportunity to see the track under consistent conditions.
Drivers worked with the engineers to tweak their final setup changes test a brake changeover for all 3 cars.
PRACTICE 4
Car #6 Waters/Winterbottom: 6th
Car #55 Randle/Moffat: 15th
Car #5 Gray/Dalton: 27th
By mid afternoon it was time for the Dunlop series to start their first race of the weekend.
Both Rylan and Lochie made a great jump off the line and held position into turn 1. Rueben delivered an ever stronger start pushing to make a position as they ran up the hill.
Nash was quick over the 30 plus minute race, pushing past a couple of cars to make up 2 positions overall for the race.
It wasn’t long before Lochie and Rylan pulled away and gapped the field by 8 seconds, comfortably tackling the mountain together. Reuben held3rd and started to build a lead of his own as the chequered flag came out.
RACE 1
Car #6 Lochie Dalton: 1st
Car #55 Rylan Gray: 2nd
Car #5 Reuben Goodall: 3rd
Car #222 Nash Morris : 5th
Main game then rolled into their big session of the day – qualifying.
It is the true test of 4 practice sessions, debriefs, plans and everything the mountain throws at you in a 40 minute session.
Its not to go without mention, both Lochie and Rylan’s double duties after only having 2 minutes between jumping out of the car and preparing for their first Bathurst 1000 qualifying in the main game.
A small lock up into the final turn undid the first proper flying lap from Waters, so a quick pit stop for fresh boots and he was sent back out.
Randle was slowly finding his pace putting in solid laps early that were landing him just outside the top 10.
Initial laps from the field seem to set the benchmark as the time ticked through Friday qualifying. New tyres and a warm track did not seem to displace much of the top 10 as time ticked on.
When it came to crunch time, the 5 minute to go mark meant everyone dove in for new tyres and returned to the track in what looked like a race with how close everyone was together.
Randle and Waters did not disappoint on their flying laps, sticking it within the 10 with solid times. The final few cars crossed the lines and the boys held on for tomorrows top 10 shootout.
Randles finish in qualifying marks the first time he will feature in the top 10 shootout in Bathurst.
For Rylan and Lochie, there are some tweaks to be made tothe car but it continues to remain in one piece and will line up rearing to go come Sunday.
