From extreme heat, humidity, changing tracks and everything in between. It was a test of preparedness that hit the team come the first track session.
With track works completed earlier in the week, the first support category had deteriorated part of the resurface work which meant the remaining non Supercars sessions would be run on the short circuit once again.
First up was qualifying for the Autosport program and a chance to put together a couple of big weeks of testing and practice into motion.
For most of the session there was not much change in the order as all drivers hung in the top 10. With 2 minutes to go, the times really came alive and all drivers were finding their limits around the Druitt Circuit.
DUNLOP SERIES QUALIFYING ONE
#5 Reuben Goodall: 4th
#6 Ben Gomersall: 6th
#55 Nash Morris: 9th
#56 Campbell Logan: 8th
Qualifying was a strong showing from the first green flag of part 1. Both cars rolled top 10 times to begin as there was early rain worrying the whole field.
Randle and Waters enjoyed the changing conditions and punched times through that safely had them heading for the first top 10 shootout of the season with time on the clock
SUPERCARS QUALIFYING
#6 Cam Waters: 6th
#55 Thomas Randle: 7th
The rain cleared and there was a consistent patch of Rscing that was ahead for the Autosport lineup. Reuben made a great start off the line jumping up into p2 early on lap one.
The rest of the boys got away cleanly with them finding a consistent running pace in the early stages of the race. The field was not out to play nicely with many cars in the field converting their car to a lawn mower.
Toward the end of the race, Gomersall and Nash suffered a little bit of car performance that hindered their last stints. Gomersall had a small off with a few minutes to go as his breaks gave out on him.
DUNLOP SERIES RACE ONE
#5 Reuben Goodall: 2nd
#6 Ben Gomersall: 6th
#55 Nash Morris: 9th
#56 Campbell Logan: 11th
Supercars race started with a bang and the true side of running is racing was on display. We saw our first safety car of 2026 early with the stopping of a car on track.
Both 6 and 55 opted to take the stop, with 55 in an awkward double stack position. The traffic in pit lane was similar to peak hour in Melbourne with cars any which way you looked.
Escaping unscathed with fuel and tyres was a sigh of relief as both cars re-entered the racetrack. Cam was a little in front of Thomas but still both within the top 10. The double stack did cause Randle some time loss as he entered back into the race
By mid point in the race both cars settled into a rhythm that kept them in some tight battles with the plan to run long and have tyre advantages toward the end of the race.
As the second stops rolled around it was a clear run in and out for both cars that had extended their runs as per the plans.
Once Cam hit the track he had tyre life over his next 4 opponents ahead and took only a few laps before charging them down with clean overtakes.
Toward the end Randle picked up a 5 second penalty for track limits. He managed a gap from some cars that were close behind but did give up a few spots at the chequered flag.
Overall good race pace was shown from both race cars and we get one more chance in both categories tomorrow for redemption and to go one better.
SUPERCARS RACE TWO
#6 Cam Waters: 4th
#55 Thomas Randle: 14th
We return tomorrow to kick off at 09:55 with Autosport team out for their second qualifying of the weekend.
